Challenge To have a cohesive team you can lead well, you have to establish trust. But how?

Solution There’s no single factor more important than trust. And in order for trust to work, there has to be a connection that’s built on understanding and empathy, and you have to establish that your motive isn’t just about you. The other person has to know that you’re also for them. When someone trusts you, they invest in you. It’s what ultimately makes everything work.

In this episode Dr. Henry Cloud and Jeff Brown discuss the importance of trust, what it takes to build trust and how it really makes an impact in your life and business. 

In leadership, there is probably no single factor more important than trust, so I want to remember this phrase: Trust fuels investment. How? Take a look at it like this – Investment is when we take something of value, and we put it into something else to grow it. Think about what you do with money. You put it into investments to increase your earnings because you trust that it will mature. The same thing happens on a team. When the people you’re leading believe in the growth potential of your mission, they’ll invest in you to drive it.

Trust is what makes things work, and in order to achieve it, a few things need to happen.

1. Trust is built on understanding. Someone will trust you when you understand what their needs are. When you can empathize with them, they start to open up and can perform at their best.

2. People trust when they understand your motive. They trust when they know when you are there for them, that you care about what is in their best interested.

In the long run, the people you want to trust you need to know one thing: Do you really want them to succeed?

3. Shine the light on everyone but yourself. You don’t have to take credit for everything your team does. While it may be a reflection of your leadership, think about who helped you accomplish a goal.

4. Create an environment where failure is ok. People you lead will want to try new things, but they’re afraid of repercussions hanging over their head. No one wants to work for that kind of leader.
